Symptoms of Allergy
Allergy symptoms occur when your immune system overreacts to an allergen—something that usually is harmless, such as plant pollen, dust mites, molds, insect stings or food. The symptoms of an allergic reaction can vary from mild to severe.
Mild symptoms of allergies are:
- Hives(itchy red spots on the skin)
- Itching
- Nasal congestion (rhinitis)
- Rashes
- Watery or itchy eyes
Severe allergic reactions can cause other symptoms such as:
- abdominal cramping or pain
- pain or tightness in the chest
- tingling mouth
- diarrhea
- difficulty swallowing
- dizziness(vertigo)
- fear or anxiety
- shortness of breath or wheezing
- nausea or vomiting
- heart palpitations
- swelling of the face, eyes, or tongue
- weakness
- unconsciousness
In very rare cases, an allergy can lead to a severe allergic reaction, called anaphylactic shock, which can be fatal. The symptoms include:
- Swelling of the airway
- Inability to breathe
- A sudden dramatic drop in blood pressure
If you experience this type of allergic reaction, seek immediate emergency help.
