A sign is something other people, such as the doctor notice. The signs of substance dependence vary according to the individual, the substance they are addicted to, their family history (genetics), and personal circumstances. Following are some signs of addiction:
- Weight loss or weight gain
- Extreme mood changes – happy, sad, excited, anxious, etc
- Sleeping a lot more or less than usual, or at different times of day or night
- Money becomes an issue
- Loses interests in hobbies and activities
- Changes in energy – unexpectedly and extremely tired or energetic
- Unexpected and persistent coughs or sniffles
- Seeming unwell at certain times, and better at other times
- Pupils of the eyes seeming smaller or larger than usual
- Make lengthy trips outside of the home.
- Secretiveness
- Lying to family members
- Small stocks of their substance hidden away in different parts of the house or car; often in unlikely places
- Financially unpredictable, perhaps having large amounts of cash at times but no money at all at other times
- Relationship problems
- Social and/or recreational sacrifices
