Pain can have negative effects on your body. It decreases your physical, emotional, social, and spiritual well being in a variety of ways. Untreated or unrelieved pain can cause or contribute to the following:
- Be less able to function
- Feel tired and lethargic
- Feelings of weakness or fatigue
- Lose your appetite or have nausea
- Affects your posture and mobility
- Not be able to sleep, or have your sleep interrupted by pain
- Experience less enjoyment and more anxiety
- Mood swings, including feeling angry, irritable, anxious, depressed, or even suicidal.
- Feel trapped and powerless over the circumstances.
- Unable to concentrate on anything except pain
- High levels of hormones that cause stress on the lungs and heart
- Disruption of daily activities
- Be less able to enjoy sex or affection
- Feel that you are more of a burden on family or other caregivers
- The ability of the body to recover from illness
- Spikes in blood pressure which can lead to heart attacks or strokes
- Difficulty sleeping and disturbances of sleep patterns.
- Become easily irritated, impatient, and frustrated.
- Difficulty with concentration
- Increase in social isolation.
- Affect the patients’ sense of self and their relationships with family and friends
- Also experience insomnia, and cognitive impairment
