Tendon is the hard fibre which connects muscles to bones. Well, tendon injuries take place near the joints like elbow, knee, shoulder, ankle and it causes swelling as well. It can occur suddenly, but on the other hand, tendon injuries occur by many small tears generated over a period of time.
What causes a tendon injury?
Tendon injury generally develops automatically in people who all are involved in repetitive jobs or hobbies and make same motions again and again. This will worsen the tendons more and more. Similarly, sportsperson who are indulging or involve in repetitive movements can have tendon injuries — swimming, basketball, golf, bowling or baseball.
This tendon injury can happen to anyone, and this can happen all of a sudden, or it may arise slowly. Besides, age matters a lot because tendon becomes less flexible with age and can lead to a severe injury.
Some major health issues also can develop this injury, such as people who are suffering from diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis.

Symptoms of tendon injury-
The symptoms can be a pain, loss of strength and also stiffness.Repetitive movements or activities of the area affected can lead to pain. It generally occurs during early in the morning when you get up or at night. Besides, the specific part of the area may be swollen, warm, or red if there is any swelling. An inflammation may grow along the tendon.
Diagnosis of a Tendon Injury
The doctor will do the physical examinations and may ask you about your past health report and your current symptoms about the tendon injury. However, if the doctor recognises your injury is related to your sports, he will see how you use those tools or equipment.
If the injury doesn’t improve by ice, rest, and medicines, then it can be a severe symptom, and the doctor may suggest you undergo tests like an MRI, X-RAY or Ultrasound.
How to treat a tendon injury?
Proper treatment is essential to relieve pain and cure swelling and injury. You can do it at home by taking a few steps as mentioned below-
- Cold and hot treatment is essential
- Taking proper rest
- Cold pack to be given every 2 hours for about 10-15 minutes each time. You can use an ice bag for the same. It must be repeated during the first 72 hours of the injury.
- You can also take prescribed medicines to get relief from pain.
- Also, do some stretching to avoid any stiffness. A gentle exercise will work to prevent stiffness.
- You must avoid the movement or activity of the painful area, which can make the pain worse.
- Physical therapy– messaging the swollen area can low down the pain and provide you with a bit of relief.
Suffering from an injury can be severed if people will not give serious attention to it. You must take proper rest and give up all the activity for the time being to get swollen reduce. If you don’t take adequate rest, then you can develop severe complications.
