Complex Regional Pain Syndrome
Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) is a chronic pain condition which is believed to be the result of dysfunction in the central or peripheral nervous systems. It mostly affects women between the age group of 40 to 60 but it can strike at any age and affects both men and women. It most often affects one of the extremities (arms, legs, hands, or feet) and is accompanied by the changes in the skin temperature, skin colour, skin texture, swelling and stiffness in affected joints, changes in nail and hair growth patterns, sensitivity to touch or cold and clammy hands due to excessive sweating.
There is no cure for CRPS therefore the treatment is aimed at relieving painful symptoms so that people can resume their normal lives and the pain would not interfere with their daily activities. Treatment for complex regional pain syndrome is most effective when started early. In such cases, improvement and even remission are possible. The following are some treatment options that the doctor will choose depending upon the severity and cause of the pain. Your doctor will tailor your treatment based on your specific case.
Medications
- Pain relievers such as aspirin and
- Corticosteroids such as prednisone
- Bone-loss medications, such as alendronate and calcitonin.
- Antidepressants such as amitriptylin and anticonvulsants such as gabapentin
- Opiates such as codeine and morphine
Acupuncture & Acupressure
Acupuncture and acupressure are the most effective therapies for pain management. This gives almost immediate relief and results are very impressive.
Physiotherapy
It improves and restores the movement of the affected part of the body. a healthcare professional trained uses the physical methods to promote healing, such as massage and manipulation.
Psychotherapy
People with CRPS may experience anxiety and depression. Psychological therapy called cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can help in the management of chronic pain.
Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS)
Chronic pain is sometimes eased by applying electrical impulses to nerve endings.
Biofeedback
In biofeedback, you learn to become more aware of your body so that you can relax your body and relieve pain.
Spinal cord stimulation
Your doctor inserts tiny electrodes along your spinal cord. The placement of stimulating electrodes next to the spinal cordrovides a pleasant tingling sensation in the painful areas and results in pain relief.
Applying heat and cold
Applying cold may relieve swelling and sweating. If the affected area is cool, applying heat may offer relief.
Sympathetic nerve block
It involves intravenous administration of phentolamine, a drug that blocks sympathetic receptors. Another technique involves placement of an anesthetic next to the spine to directly block the sympathetic nerves. Some patients will get significant pain relief from sympathetic nerve blocks.
Homeopathy – It is worldwide popular as safe natural and effective pain management remedy. There are a number of medicines for both acute and chronic pain and are used depending on the type of painful condition. It is very suitable for long term management.
