Acupuncture is commonly used as an alternative medical treatment. It involves needles being strategically placed on a person’s body. There are many types of acupuncture.
TCM based acupuncture
This type of acupuncture not only involves acupuncture with needles, but also the burning of Chinese medicinal herbs. it uses eight principles of complementary opposites to create harmony in the body. These include yin/yang, internal/external, excess/deficiency, hot/cold. The herbs used along with the acupuncture treatment aid in strengthening the body.
Japanese acupuncture
This type of acupuncture uses smaller needles. It also focuses more on precision and efficient techniques that promote accomplishing bigger results using the smallest amount of stimulation possible.
Auricular acupuncture
Auricular acupuncture treats the entire body, just like other types of acupuncture, but it does so through particular points located in the patient’s ears. The acupuncturist pinpoints certain nerves found in the ear that relate to other parts of the body to help heal or alleviate pain in that particular part.
Korean hand acupuncture
Korean acupuncture contains some techniques and philosophies from TCM and Japanese acupuncture. In this particular style, the hands are seen as a microcosm of the entire body. Fine needles are inserted into specific points on the hand.
Cupping
Cupping is a technique used to influence the flow of Qi and blood throughout the body and/or meridians. Cupping is indicated in treating a myriad of conditions from the common cold and flu, to upper respiratory issues, digestive problems, muscular pain/spasms, arthritic pain, and headache. Contraindications – fever, skin diseases or tendency to bleed.
Moxibustion
The moxibustion involves burning mugwart, a spongy herb to warm specific acupuncture points. The heat combined with the herb stimulates circulation, warms meridians, and promotes the smooth flow of “qi.
Electro acupuncture
Electro acupuncture uses a small device that clips onto the needles. The device sends electric pulses that the acupuncturist can adjust depending on the intensity needed.
Medical acupuncture
Medical acupuncture is very similar to classical acupuncture, but it is performed by a licensed medical doctor. It incorporates the medical science surrounding neuromuscular anatomy. Some also include historically Chinese acupuncture patterns; thereby, creating a hybrid of western and eastern medical knowledge.
