Addiction is a huge barrier in relationships. It causes a lot of pain and hurt in relationship. Couples in which a partner abuses drugs or alcohol are often very unhappy. They have a very difficult time getting out of this downward spiral. People who are rooted in addiction are commonly involved in unhealthy relationships. In the case of a partner who addicts, the effect is felt by his or her children, relatives, friends, and co-workers.
How addiction is Harming the Relationship
There are several signs that addictions causing harm to the relationship.
- Talking to the addict about addictive behavior can lead to domestic violence
- Isolation from friends and relatives to hide the drinking or drug problem
- Not taking care of responsibilities in the home
- The children of addicts in these relationships are also negatively affected and may become enablers as co-dependents
