Medications for pain management
Pain management is a way of managing the pain. There are many treatments that can be used for managing pain. The best pain control can be achieved by trying appropriate medications for the problem. There are different types of medications that are used to control pain. Depending upon the root cause and severity of the pain, you doctor will prescribe the medication. Different medications that are used to reduce or control pain are:
- Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Medications (NSAIDs) – These medications relieve pain caused by muscle aches and stiffness. They also reduce inflammation in tendonitis, bursitis, and arthritis. Some of the NSAIDs are Ibuprofen, Motrin, Aleve, etc. these medications are most beneficial in cases of acute pain.
- Acetaminophen – It belongs to a class of drugs called analgesics and antipyretics. It relieves pain in mild arthritis. Acetaminophen works on the parts of the brain that receive the pain messages.
- Corticosteroids – They are given in the form of pills or injections to relieve pain. Corticosteroid helps in easing swelling, redness, itching and allergic reactions. Some of the medications are Deltasone, Hydeltrasol, and Solu-Medrol.
- Anti-Convulsants – These medications helps to relieve nerve pain. They minimize the effects of nerves that cause pain. They alter the function of the nerve and the signals that are sent to the brain. Some of the anti-convulsants include Tegretol, Neurontin, and Lyrica.
- Antidepressants – These medications enables pain control for people with chronic pain conditions that do not completely respond to usual treatments. Some antidepressant medications are Celexa, Prozac, Tofranil, Cymbalta
- Local Anesthetics – It provide temporary pain relief to an affected area. Lidoderm comes in a patch that is applied to the skin and decreases the sensitivity of the affected area.
- Opioids – Opioids are narcotic pain medications that are used for acute pain as well as chronic pain. Some examples of opioids include Morphine, Fentanyl, Oxycodone and Codeine.
- Muscle relaxants – Muscle relaxant medications are commonly used to treat back pain. Some of the medications are Valium, Flexeril and They improve pain, muscle tension, and mobility.
