What Is Depression?

This prevents further degradation of the mental state for a specific time period. One of the severe aspects of depression is that this condition affects other already present health conditions in patients. This includes arthritis, asthma, heart diseases, obesity, cancer, and diabetes, to name a few.

Like every healthcare condition, depression also comprises of some of the notable symptoms which need to be noticed on time. Researchers and scientists studying on depression have found that there are several symptoms which are commonly seen in the patients who are already affected with depression. Feeling low and negative throughout the day, especially during the morning time period is one of the most common symptoms of depression. Some individuals find it difficult to take decisions on time and focus on their routine tasks in the conventional manner. Depression also affects the individual at the physical level as well. This includes sudden weight gain or loss combined with lowered self-confidence in day to day routine. It is associated with the urge to eat more or at the other end feel like avoiding meals or foods which is very common among patients affected with depression.

There are different types of depression which vary with age, state of the individual, and cause of the same. The basic types of depression include major depression, persistent depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, and psychotic depression. Some other types of depression are peripartum disorder, premenstrual dysphoric disorder, and atypical depression. The causes associated with presence of depression are primarily stress, health issues, and intake of drugs. In some of the latest researches, it is revealed that brain chemistry imbalance and genetic presence also lead to the occurrence of depression in an individual. Therefore, it is important to check in the family if any of the family members are suffering from depression like condition.

After understanding the symptoms and causes of depression, it becomes vital for the patients to go ahead with the right type of treatment. When patients are diagnosed with initial stages of depression, it is essential to take proper precautions right from the start. Patients need to talk to an experienced therapist and know about their current state of mind and work on improving it towards the positive path. Depression can occur at any stage of life right from childhood to elderly individuals. So, parents of kids and direct family members need to be proactive when discussing and solving depression condition with the help of the recommended treatment. Once, the patient is checked and confirmed that he wouldn’t pose to be a threat for others, he is discharged from the hospital. Along with hospitalization, counseling sessions and medications can be combined to find the best results for patients.

What Causes Depression?

Before we begin treatment it is good to understand depression. So many times horrible looking things have simple solutions. Not to forget the age old saying that prevention is better than cure. Therefore, for both prevention and cure it is crucial to understand depression.

Depression is complex disease or we can call it a group of conditions clubbed together as depression. Why we are calling it complex? Because of diversity. The risk and causative factors are diverse, symptoms are even more diverse. No wonder, no single treatment is good enough. We can with confidence say that EVERY CASE OF DEPRESSION IS DIFFERENT. So to believe that same set of few medicines will treat all those suffering is too simplistic and is bound to fail.

Coming back to – What causes depression

– Is it genetic?

– Is it due to learning effect?

– Is it due to circumstances?

– Is it due to brain chemistry?

– Is it due to personality of the person?

– Is it primary or related to other important aspect such as anxiety

So when we say every case is different, the cause of depression in every person is different and unique combination

1. Genetics – Genetics indeed play a role. No two people are born alike. Here it must be noted that it is not very straightforward ankylosing spondylitis linked to HLA B 27. No single gene is responsible. Children of people with depression may not have depression and children of people with no depression can have depression. It is the unique combination of genes that a person carry that makes him or her somewhat prone to depression. But do not jump to any conclusion. Life has lot more than genes.

2. Learning – This is very interesting and probably ignored. A lot of that we have emotions, thoughts, behavior are learned. We pick up patterns in family and outside, from parents, other family members, other significant and even not so significant people. We learn by observation to apply and with application we learn more.

3. Circumstances – This is much talked about and no doubt has significant role. Anything that is away from expected can cause frustration, stress and depression. Range is enormous – Physical, emotional or sexual abuse, violence or conflict is seen as big by most people. Death is another big. Further any problem in academics, job, relationship, health, finance, religion, social interaction even day to day life. It could be about self or family, community, nation or even entire humanity. Cases are seen where people get depressed about how world is becoming less human. Remember it is the complex mix of circumstances. On top of it a lot depends on how one perceives. Same thing depressing for one is not for other. One occasion it may be depressing but not on other occasion.

4. Brain chemistry – A very common term used in almost all psychiatric issues including depression is chemical imbalance in brain. It has been observed that certain brain chemical transmitters do get disturbed. Many treatments attempts to re-balance this imbalance. But it is not that simple and straight. These chemicals are under a complex system of brain and no single factor or medicine can increase or decrease them.

5. Personality – Do we get designed for depression? Over anxious, over sensitive, self critical, perfectionist even over aggressive can make a person prone to depression. But the question is that making of these types of personality is itself under influence of so many other factors. Good point is that all these personality types are not fixed and can be changed.

6. Emotions – Another factor which is less understood probably least understood. And this factor plays biggest role. It is less understood because most emotions are subjective even for doctor and therapist. And we all know how difficult it is to understand own emotions. Emotions can be subtle or complex. It can be too contradictory to understand. A lot depends on how an individual feels joy or sadness, anger, worry, fear, feeling of belonging or isolation. Most basic is – do you feel wanted and loved? There is two way interaction between emotions and chemical neurotransmitters in brain. They both can influence each other. Emotions interacts with life circumstances and also interact with each other. Depression can occur along with anxiety or due to anxiety.

7. Nutrition – Oh how much we know but how little we do. We all know importance of good healthy balanced diet. We know what deficiencies can do and how easy it is to avoid them. But alas! how often we suffer from over eating as well as nutritional deficiencies be it Vit B Vit D and Calcium Iron Selenium Manganese.

8. Lifestyle – A two way cause and effect. Depression can affect our lifestyle and also our lifestyle affects mental health. How is our work life balance, do we sleep sufficient, do we have sufficient physical activity, how is our time management, how organized we are, do we enjoy our holidays and go on vacation etc. A big factor here is modern lifestyle which is indoors and away from nature. Not to forget the gadgets and time spent on social networking. It is not only about the radiation but also about fake life that one goes into, compares and feel sad.

9. Medical condition – Medical illness can affect in two ways. Some ailments directly linked to depression like hypothyroidism, diabetes, SLE etc. Other ailments can cause depression due to long suffering with no solution in sight like cancer, HIV, heart disease, chronic pain etc. Some other mental ailments too are linked to depression like phobia, panic, PTSD etc.

10. Medication or Substance abuse – Some medicines are known to cause depression. They do so by altering the status of neurotransmitters in brain. Those people with other factors of depression present must be extra cautious with such medicines and must always tell doctor beforehand so that such medicines can be replaced by other suitable medicines. Also included here is the role of alcohol and substance abuse that again interact two way. People with depression are prone to alcohol and substance abuse as also those on these substances are prone to depression.

To conclude depression has as many faces as there are people on earth. It is complex, unique and very subjective. We can make humanity free from depression if we follow a well guide program that includes:

– good understanding of depression

– freedom from social stigma

– not to dismiss it as just habit

– freedom from guilt and self blame for depression

– support of near and dear ones and society at large

– holistic treatment with follow up as long as required

He inserts the fine needle into the patient at certain specific points in the body to bring the desired results in the respective patient. It is made that only sterile and single-use needles are chosen for the procedure. Acupuncture trains the nervous system such that the patient can have a stable and positive mindset. This ensures that the patient finally seeks stability in his increased mood swings. It also boosts the self-esteem and decision-making skills of the patient at the end of the therapy.

Bullying and Depression

Depression is a mental illness which affects the mental health of an individual. This mental condition can affect an individual irrespective of the gender and age of the individual. There are various causes of depression which varies one case to another. Among these causes, some of these causes develop since childhood and exist for decades. The most common causes of depression include increased stress, lifestyle changes, and incidents which occurred in the years since birth. Events which take place in childhood play an important in improving or deteriorating the mental health status of the respective child. Bullying is one such incidence which several children face in their schools or their friends network. American Psychological Association has specified bullying as one’s aggressive behavior where he intentionally causes injury to another individual.

Effects of bullying and depression:

Bullying and depression are closely associated with each other. Both these incidences affect an individual from childhood. The thinking and mental condition of the individual changes when he faces the situations where he is made fun of in the school time. Bullying mainly affects the confidence of the individual. Also, his self-image is poorly impacted due to increased cases of bullying. As per some of the recent researches performed by top authorities in the field of mental health, it is found that children often feel themselves like victims when they are bullied in school. The feeling of victimization proves to be dangerous for the children in most of the cases. This is because the child who is bullied at times does not dare to fight the circumstances of bullying. This makes him emotionally and physically prone to bullying and similar conditions. Their attendance in school and performance in the academics also gets affected in a worse manner. Such situations lead to a long-lasting effect on the minds and bodies of children facing the same.

Signs associated with Bullying and Depression:

Bullying often progresses to conditions like depression, anxiety, and other psychological-related disorders. Here are some of the most common symptoms of bullying which parents need to focus on and treat them as warning signs to take care of their children:

Lose of interest in studies and hesitation to go to school

Evident troubled sleeping combined with increased frequency of nightmares

When the child returns home, then he has injury marks present on his body.

The child eats more than other days out of anxiety.

The self-confidence of the child gets reduced

The child stays isolated in his room and does not wish to talk to anyone in the family or even among friends.

How to cope with bullying and depression linked with it?

Family members, especially parents, must try to implement specific measures which will help in healing from the effects of the bullying. Even adults need to take effective solutions to help them deal with the consequences of bullying, along with depression.

Consult Psychologists: Parents of children who are affected with bullying need to make sure that proper consultation is taken from medical experts such as Psychologists, Psychiatrists, and Social workers in this field. Adults can make sure that they discuss the core cause of their depression and reach an effective solution for their current state.

Psychotherapy: Here, family counseling, individual counseling, or group counseling with the same age children can prove to be beneficial for the children. This will help them get optimistic towards their near and distant future.

Medication: Anti-anxiety and anti-depressant depressants are also added to the treatment plan of the patient if the above two solutions fail to provide promising results.

Our society is evolving, and several path-breaking changes are occurring around us. Bullying has also affected different individuals in the LGBT section due to lack of awareness and acceptance at the same time. Bullying, which leads to depression, should be monitored in the best possible manner with the guidance of the medical and related experts.

In our daily lives, we are often diagnosed with certain health-related conditions which must be diagnosed and treated in the required manner to prevent any kind of adverse effects on the overall health of the individual. Depression is a mental illness which is caused due to several factors which vary from one individual to another. Some of these factors include increased stress, sudden loss of a close family member, and changes in the brain functioning.

Brain chemistry is often affected with the loss of a close relative. If the brain chemistry gets altered, then the respective individual has more chances of being diagnosed with depression. One of the recent researches has concluded that if the number and performance of the neurotransmitters are reduced, then one is ought to suffer from depression. Neurotransmitter is one of the crucial and complex parts of the brain which significantly contribute to the smooth functioning of the brain in the daily lives. These neurotransmitters are also a part of the process in which there is an occurrence of chemical imbalance in the patients. Neurotransmitters functioning affect the mental health of the patients. This leads to the occurrence of medical conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, Epilepsy, and Parkinson’s disease.

Types of neurotransmitters: There are different types of neurotransmitters present in the brains. Each of these neurotransmitters has its unique role in causing a depressive condition in the patients.

– Excitatory neurotransmitters: Here, the neurotransmitters will lead to a boost to the action potential. These types of neurotransmitters cause excitatory effects on the brain. Epinephrine and norepinephrine fall in this category of the neurotransmitters.

– Inhibitory neurotransmitters: Here, these neurotransmitters cause inhibitory effects on the respective neuron. This type of neurotransmitters include serotonin and GABA, which is also known as Gama-aminobutyric acid.

– Modulatory neurotransmitters: Also known as neuromodulators, these neurotransmitters also affect the chemical messengers in the brain.

Neurotransmitters affecting depressive conditions: Here are the three neurotransmitters which affect the mental health of the individual.

– Serotonin: Serotonin is responsible for bringing positive and good thoughts and feelings in the minds of the respective individual. When the serotonin levels are reduced, then norepinephrine neurotransmitter levels also fall accordingly.

– Dopamine: This brain substance leads to development of the positive feelings. When the dopamine levels are reduced, then it leads to rise of the conditions such as anxiety and depression, to name a few. Dopamine leads to occurrence of Parkinson’s disease and Schizophrenia.

– Norepinephrine: One of the experienced medical specialists has specified that reduced level of norepinephrine affects the mental wellness of an individual. This leads to occurrence of depression.

Thus, chemical imbalances are caused due to the changes in the functioning of the neurotransmitters in the respective individual. The chemistry of depression involves several neurotransmitters in the scenario which need to be dealt with at an individual rate to cure the presence of depression.

With time, the body of the patient needs more amount of drug to make sure that he gets the same relaxation over time.

Treatment of substance abuse caused due to depression: When an individual is already addicted to alcohol or drugs and feels like being affected with depressive disorder. Here are some of the most commonly performed treatments for patients with such addiction and depression.

Anti-depressant medication: These medications form the base of the treatment of drug or alcohol-addicted patients who are recently diagnosed with depression.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: In Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), the self-defeating talks and thoughts are dealt with the help of expert counseling and guidance.

Trauma Therapies: The troubling memories are brought in the limelight, and the patient is taught to deal with them positively. This aids in the recovery process of the mental health of the patient.

Family Systems Therapy: This is a unique therapy where the counselor speaks and guide about how to deal with the family problems to other family members as well. This helps in bringing in improvement in the health of the patient.

Thus, substance abuse contributes significantly to the deterioration of the overall health of the patient. One must keep a check on the lifestyle to prevent the occurrence of habits such as drug and alcohol abuse. Then, proper training of the subconscious mind is performed to bring positive changes in the patient after the completion of the chosen treatment. Hypnosis or hypnotherapy helps in understanding the thoughts and feelings which are hidden in the patient. The mental health specialist perceives these thoughts, and accordingly, the patient’s condition gets improved. In the course of hypnotherapy, the professional gets to know if the patient had faced any traumatic experience in the past. The thoughts which are associated with these experiences are recognized by the doctor and the patient as well.

Effectiveness of Hypnotherapy:

Hypnotherapy is a useful technique to treat depression. But then there are various controversies which exist around the benefit of Hypnotherapy. Some scientists and doctors think that hypnosis or hypnotherapy do not affect well, whereas other doctors have specified that patients diagnosed with depression have benefited a lot with the hypnotherapy. According to some of the recent researches, hypnotherapy is recommended for the patients in case of anxiety, depressive disorders, sleep problems, increased stress levels, grief, and trauma. Hypnotherapy or hypnosis can be used along with medications for pain management in different conditions of patients like hypertension, irritable bowel syndrome, and specific allergies. A hypnotherapist is a prime professional who is responsible for treating patients with hypnotherapy.

Thus, hypnotherapy has helped several patients facing depression to go ahead and get treated with the necessary treatment. But, if proper measures are taken on the part of the patient, then such medical illnesses can be smartly avoided. One can prevent himself from being affected with depression with the help of the following prevention tips which have proven to be very useful in the past.

Don’t overload work and manage stress: Most of the individuals these days find themselves unsatisfied concerning the professional lives, especially that of work. This increases the stress levels in the body and poses to be a risk for the overall body. The feeling of being overwhelmed signifies the stress levels in the patient. Stress needs to be managed well, if an individual wants to avoid bad stress in life.

Stay fit: One of the biggest concerns of individuals regarding depression is that there is a good chance of 50% of relapsing again in near or far in the future. This risk of relapse varies with the type, severity of depression and present status of the patient. As per recent research, exercising regularly has proved to be very useful for depression patients. In one of the studies conducted in the year 2008, it is found that when individuals perform resistance with aerobic exercises recover better than the individuals who perform aerobic exercises heal faster, and the recurrence rate of depression is much less than earlier.

Maintain a positive attitude: Often, individuals lack positivity in their lives. It is important to go ahead with a positive attitude in one’s lives. This is because depression is directly associated with negative thinking. Building a positive thinking at a gradual pace will help them in preventing the occurrence of the depressive disorders.

Take big decisions calmly: Every person faces some challenging situations in life where he needs to make a significant decision, which will not only impact his own life, but individuals around him. Experts suggest that such decisions should be taken only when an individual is confident enough that he is making the decision with a stable state of mind.

Ditch the blame game: Honestly, blaming won’t help you. It will only ignite the negative thoughts buried in the mind. Individuals who blame themselves need to make sure to accept the fact that everything around a person cannot be changed. One should focus only on the aspects of life, which can be changed. Develop gratitude for life.

Eat well: Feed your mind with the most nutritious foods on the planet. Make it a point to consume a diet which has all components present in it including proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals. Omega-3 based low fat diet helps a lot to prevent symptoms related to depression.

Biochemistry: In this, the function of the brain is taken into consideration. The functioning of brain chemicals contributes to the occurrence of depression to a great extent.

Role of Genetics in Depression

In the modern era, several individuals are getting affected with some of the most health-threatening conditions such as depression. Depression is a state of mind which is nowadays usually found in 1 out of 6 individuals when the global statistics are observed. This usually occurs due to a rise in the professional stress and improper work-life balance. Also, it is said that hormonal imbalances in men and women also create a way to depression. But there is no specific cause of occurrence of depression in the population. As we are progressing towards an advanced world, various researches are held to find out the cause of depression. One of the potential factors which has a strong link with presence of depression is that of genetics. As per one of the latest researches, it is found that if a person has developed depression, then there are two to three times chances of his family members like siblings and children to be diagnosed with depression-like condition. These family members are in direct relation with him and therefore are at more risk. When expressed in the form of numbers, these relatives have 20% to 30% more chances than that of the healthy individuals who have no family member being diagnosed with such conditions. Experts have opinionated the fact that talking to family members, especially parents, is one of the best ways to find out whether you are subjected to depression or not. This is the least expensive way as well to know whether you will ever be diagnosed with depression.

According to one of the top medical institutions in the world, genetics contributes to around 50% of the depression cases in the population across the globe. It has a significant role in the occurrence of a major type of depression. Depression occurs with the changes in a set of genes rather than some particular changes in one specific gene in the respective individual’s body. The study also mentioned that no one gene inherited from any one of the parents could cause depression. An individual inherits a specific combination of genes which thereby causes any significant health condition at a gradual pace. Certain specific combinations lead to the occurrence and thereby later diagnosis of conditions such as depression. You will be surprised to hear that development of depression is associated with more than 102 genetic variants, which are present across 269 genes. Each of these genes contributes to the occurrence of genetics-based depression in patients. Some individuals can turn themselves resilient to environmental factors which tend to lead to depression in such individuals. If an individual has a genetic connection with depression, then if in case his stress levels increase over the years, he is more likely to suffer from depression. This is because the genetic presence of depression along with stress increases the chances of the individual to suffer from depression. Thus, genetic link and depression are closely associated with each other, which impacts the overall well-being of the concerned individual.

Every emotion in human beings occurs for a reason, but if the emotion goes beyond boundaries and becomes uncontrollable, then it becomes to deal with the particular emotion with a positive mindset. Stress is a factor which fuels emotions such as worry and concern when it occurs in the human body. Stress is useful only if it is treated as a motivation factor in one’s life. Therefore, one must understand that taking only some amount of stress is good for health and excessive increase in the stress levels will lead to depression. You will be surprised to know that life events such as marriage or joining a new job are definite sources of stress. Job loss is now considered an acute stressor which contributes to causing stress. This thereby leads to depression if the individual does not find any job after a couple of months.

Treatment of depression associated with stress: Patients suffering from depression because of stress are advised to make certain specific changes in their routine. This is done along with following of a treatment plan crafted under the guidance of the medical specialist.

Mental specialist advises performing yoga and meditations to ensure that the patient can see the present scenario of the patients.

Performing exercise daily helps the individual to get fit. Exercise leads to the development of the respective mental and physical health, which aids in reducing and keeping stress levels low.

Proper consumption of medications prescribed by the medical specialist apart from exercises to fetch the desired results.

Thus, patients need to make sure that the right medical specialist is consulted. Timely meals and sufficient rest will help improve their current scenario. One needs to be positive enough to deal with stress and depression, thus eradicating both from one’s lives forever.

Patients need to take proper care while consuming these medications after being diagnosed with depressive disorders. If any side effects occur, then one must consult with a medical specialist and go ahead with the treatment as per the doctor’s suggestion. Self-discontinuing of the prescribed medications should be strictly avoided to prevent any adverse effects on the body. Children and adolescents must not be given anti-depressant medications as a first-line medication for their respective depressive disorders.

Psychotherapy: Psychotherapy mainly involves Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Interpersonal Therapy. These two types of psychotherapies fetch the desired results in improving the mental health of the patient. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy includes cognitive triad. The three components present in the cognitive triad are negative thinking about oneself, experiences in life, and one’s future. The complete thinking of the patient turns into a negative one, and he loses hope in life. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy identifies the current mental health issues and accordingly treats them with success. These days, some of the advanced health centers offer Computerized CBT procedures. Most of the patients with depression suffer from the isolation which prevents them from having healthy relationships and interacting with others in the social network. The main aim of the specialist is to work on these loopholes and help the patient receive quality results from this advanced treatment.

Psychodynamic psychotherapy: Here, the patient diagnosed with depression meets a mental health therapist. The therapist conducts a discussion session to understand certain hidden feelings and mindset, which is causing such major changes in the behavior of the patient. This treatment of the depressive condition is also known as psychoanalytic psychotherapy.

Counseling: Counseling with an experienced counselor who has experience in dealing with depression patients is essential to get healed entirely from this mental illness. This helps the patient receive overall treatment for their depressive disorder.

Thus, if mental disorders like depression are diagnosed at the right point of time, then it becomes easier to treat the patient in the best way. This ultimately improves the mental state and health of the patient.
